Biography

Thomas "Holt" McCarley

 ...is a native of Spartanburg, South Carolina. After discovering and developing a passion for music in his early teens, he went on to study music at the South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts and Humanities in Greenville, South Carolina for his last two years of high school. In the summer of 2009 he was one of four young composers selected nationally at the high school level to study at the Brevard Music Institute with composers Robert Palmer, Kevin Putz, and Grammy Award-winner Robert Aldridge. In the Fall of 2013, Holt spent several months studying music in Arezzo, Italy, under the tutelage of composer/conductor Lorenzo Donati. He has had works premiered by Vox Corids, a professional choral ensemble residing in Arezzo, Italy, Furman Singers,  Furman’s Bergman Saxophone Quartet and South Carolina’s Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities’ choral ensemble Cantus.

 

He holds a Bachelor's degree in Music Composition from Furman University, where he studied with Mark Kilstofte and Jay Bocook. He is presently pursuing his Master's in Composition at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, where he studies with world-class composers such as Zhou Long (Pulitzer, 2011), Chen Yi, and James Mobberley.
